This continental initiative strengthens climate information systems across Africa and supports countries in integrating science-based climate services into policy, planning, disaster preparedness, agriculture, and health sectors.

Position Overview

The AUC is recruiting a highly skilled Climate Monitoring and Prediction Expert to support the implementation of climate services and forecasting systems within the ECCAS region. This role is ideal for professionals specialized in climate monitoring, seasonal forecasting, atmospheric sciences, and climate data management.

The successful candidate will work closely with climate scientists, forecasters, regional institutions, and international partners to strengthen Africa’s climate resilience and improve decision-making in sectors such as:

  • Agriculture
  • Disaster Risk Management (DRM)
  • Health
  • Environmental Planning

Main Purpose of the Role

The Climate Monitoring and Prediction Expert will provide high-level technical expertise in:

  • Long-range climate forecasting
  • Seasonal prediction systems
  • Climate monitoring and analysis
  • Climate data rescue and management
  • Climate impact assessment
  • Climate adaptation planning

The position also supports the production of climate bulletins, policy briefs, and scientific reports that guide governments and institutions in climate-related planning and decision-making.


Key Responsibilities

Climate Monitoring & Forecasting

  • Collect, process, and analyze climate data to generate climate products and services
  • Produce seasonal and long-range climate forecasts under the Climate Services Information System (CSIS)
  • Monitor climate variability, climate risks, vulnerabilities, and adaptation trends across the ECCAS region

Climate Data Systems & Infrastructure

  • Support establishment of Climate Data Management Systems (CDMS) and User Interface Platforms (UIP)
  • Process historical climate datasets from systems such as:
    • Copernicus
    • ECMWF
    • EUMETSAT
  • Contribute to climate data rescue and information management initiatives

Sectoral Climate Applications

You will also prepare climate bulletins, statements, and advisory reports for governments and stakeholders.

Research & Scientific Contributions

  • Write and publish scientific articles on climate forecasting and climate change
  • Contribute to Africa State of Climate Reports and regional climate assessments
  • Collaborate with international climate working groups and scientific organizations including:
    • WMO
    • ESA CCI
    • EUMETSAT Climate SAF
    • CEOS Climate Working Group

Academic Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in:
    • Meteorology
    • Climatology
    • Environmental Sciences
    • Atmospheric Physics
    • Related discipline
  • Higher academic qualifications are an added advantage
  • Additional training in atmospheric sciences and statistics is preferred
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience, including at least 2 years at international or equivalent level
  • Experience in:
    • Climate change
    • Atmospheric modeling
    • Environmental assessment
    • Disaster Risk Reduction
    • Climate prediction systems

Required Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of climate modeling and forecasting systems
  • Experience using regional and global climate models for climate simulations and predictions
  • Understanding of climate-related risks, impacts, and disaster forecasting
  • Knowledge of policy analysis and climate policy development
  • Strong computer skills including:
    • Linux
    • Windows OS
    • Microsoft Office Suite

Contract Duration

Remuneration

The annual salary package includes:

  • US$ 80,801.70 for internationally recruited staff
  • US$ 65,992.92 for locally recruited staff
