Job Overview

The Chief AI Ethics Officer will lead IBM’s AI Ethics and Compliance function for the Central African region, headquartered in Kumba. Reporting directly to the Regional Vice President, the role is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing ethical guidelines for AI product development and deployment. The officer will collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including data scientists, engineers, legal counsel, and business leaders, to embed ethical considerations throughout the AI lifecycle. This position plays a pivotal role in safeguarding trust, ensuring regulatory compliance, and promoting responsible AI practices that align with both IBM’s global standards and local cultural contexts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive AI ethics framework tailored to regional regulations and cultural norms.
  • Conduct risk assessments for AI projects, identifying potential biases, privacy concerns, and societal impacts.
  • Provide guidance and training to product teams on ethical AI design, data governance, and responsible innovation.
  • Collaborate with legal and compliance departments to ensure AI solutions meet local and international regulatory requirements.
  • Lead the creation of transparent documentation, model explainability reports, and impact assessments for AI deployments.
  • Engage with external stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and academic institutions, to promote responsible AI practices.
  • Monitor emerging AI ethics standards and incorporate best practices into IBM’s regional policies.
  • Represent IBM at industry conferences, workshops, and policy forums on AI ethics.

Required Skills

  • Deep understanding of AI technologies, machine learning pipelines, and data lifecycle management.
  • Expertise in ethical frameworks, bias mitigation techniques, and privacy‑by‑design principles.
  • Strong knowledge of Cameroonian data protection laws and international regulations such as GDPR.
  • Excellent communication skills to translate complex ethical concepts for technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to lead cross‑functional teams and influence senior leadership.
  • Analytical mindset with experience in conducting impact assessments and risk analyses.
  • Fluency in English and French is highly desirable.

Education

A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Ethics, Law, Philosophy, or a related field is required. Advanced certifications in AI governance, data privacy, or compliance (e.g., ISO/IEC 27001, AI4People) are considered an asset.

Experience

Minimum of ten years of professional experience in AI development, data governance, or ethical compliance, with at least five years in a leadership role. Prior experience working within multinational technology firms or consulting environments is preferred.

Salary

The compensation package ranges from 2,500,000 to 4,000,000 SSP annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and a retirement savings plan.
