Job Overview

The Data Privacy Officer will lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of privacy policies and programs that comply with Cameroonian data protection regulations, the African Union’s data privacy framework, and Google’s global standards. This role is pivotal in ensuring that all products, services, and internal processes respect user privacy, mitigate risk, and uphold the company’s reputation for trustworthiness. The successful candidate will collaborate with legal, security, product, and engineering teams to embed privacy by design across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and update the company’s privacy framework, policies, and procedures in line with local and international regulations.
  • Conduct privacy impact assessments (PIAs) for new products, services, and major system changes.
  • Provide legal and practical guidance to product managers, engineers, and marketers on data handling, consent mechanisms, and user rights.
  • Monitor regulatory developments in Cameroon and the African region, advising senior leadership on compliance implications.
  • Lead incident response for privacy breaches, coordinating investigations, notifications, and remediation actions.
  • Deliver regular training and awareness programs for employees on data protection principles and best practices.
  • Collaborate with external regulators, industry groups, and privacy advocacy organizations to represent Google’s interests.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation and reporting for internal audits and external regulatory reviews.

Required Skills

  • Deep understanding of Cameroonian data protection law, GDPR, and other relevant privacy frameworks.
  • Strong analytical and risk assessment abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of translating complex legal concepts into actionable guidance.
  • Proficiency in privacy management tools and data mapping software.
  • Ability to work cross‑functionally in fast‑paced, multicultural environments.
  • High ethical standards and a commitment to user trust.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Law, Information Security, Computer Science, or a related field is required. A Master’s degree or professional certification such as CIPP/Europe, CIPP/Africa, or CIPM is highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of five years of hands‑on experience in data privacy, compliance, or legal advisory roles, preferably within a technology or multinational corporation. Demonstrated experience leading privacy programs and conducting PIAs is essential.
